چکیده

An important step toward improving radiative transfer codes in general circulation models (GCMs) is to thoroughly evaluate them either by comparison to measurements directly or by comparing them to other data-validated radiation models. The Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTM) shortwave (SW) radiation model accurately reproduces direct beam fluxes from the Line-by-Line Radiative Transfer Model (LBLRTM) (Clough and Iacono 1995), and direct and diffuse fluxes from Code for High-resolution Accelerated Radiative Transfer with Scattering (CHARTS); (Moncet and Clough 1997). All three models were developed at Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. with support from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program. Shortwave clear-sky fluxes from two operational GCMs are evaluated by comparison to RRTM_SW for several standard profiles.

Radiative forcing by long-lived greenhouse gases: Calculations with the AER radiative transfer models

[1] A primary component of the observed recent climate change is the radiative forcing from increased concentrations of long-lived greenhouse gases (LLGHGs). Effective simulation of anthropogenic climate change by general circulation models (GCMs) is strongly dependent on the accurate representation of radiative processes associated with water vapor, ozone, and LLGHGs. In the context of the inc...

Impact of an improved shortwave radiation scheme in the MAECHAM5 General Circulation Model

In order to improve the representation of ozone absorption in the stratosphere of the MAECHAM5 general circulation model, the spectral resolution of the shortwave radiation parameterization used in the model has been increased from 4 to 6 bands. Two 20-years simulations with the general circulation model have been performed, one with the standard and the other with the newly introduced paramete...

A new approach for simultaneously retrieving cloud albedo and cloud fraction from surface-based shortwave radiation measurements

Surface-based measurements of shortwave (SW) radiative fluxes contain valuable information on cloud properties, but have not been fully used to infer those properties. Here a new analytical approach is presented that simultaneously infers cloud albedo and cloud fraction from surface-based measurements of total and direct radiative fluxes. An inspection of the analytical formulation reveals that...

Effects of Improved Radiative Transfer Modeling for Climate Simulations

The interaction of shortwave and infrared radiation in the atmosphere with clouds and greenhouse gases represents a complex process that contributes significantly to maintaining earth's climate system. For climate model simulations to become more accurate, it is essential that this process be modeled properly as verified by direct comparisons with observations and with results from a validated ...

On the Extension of Rapid Radiative Transfer Model to the Shortwave Region

In this work we describe the second phase in the development of the rapid radiative transfer model (RRTM) (Mlawer et al. 1996), a rapid and accurate radiative transfer model designed for climate applications. The initial phase of RRTM, which uses the correlated-k method for radiative transfer, allowed the calculation of fluxes and cooling rates in the longwave region in clear-sky conditions. Re...
